Saint Patrick’s was completed in 1906 replacing the first Catholic church in Billings, Saint Joachim’s, which was built in 1887. The time capsule revealed that 236 donors paid for the construction of St. Patrick’s. It was built by parishioners who saw Billings as a growing community. With the same spirit of hope and promise 781 donors paid for the Millennium Renovation.
In 1954 the first extensive renovation was undertaken. In the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s modifications were made to the Sanctuary to accommodate the changes of Vatican II.
Because of the population growth in Yellowstone County, Archbishop Murphy received Vatican permission to change the name of the Diocese in 1980 to The Diocese of Great Falls – Billings. Soon after, Saint Patrick’s was designated as the Co-Cathedral.
After careful preparation over a five-year period, it was decided to do the work in two phases. Phase 1, which began in October 1997, included the new copper roof work on the towers, washing and remortaring of the brick exterior. Phase II, which began July 1999, involved everything in the interior as well as the new sacristy and the gathering space out front.
